Hawa Mahal |The Face of Jaipur

Hawa Mahal Jaipur
Hawa Mahal is synonymous with the Pink City- Jaipur!

The face of Jaipur?

In my opinion,  Hawa Mahal is the face of Jaipur. This building is synonymous with the Pink City-Jaipur. Quite like how Taj Mahal is with the Agra! It’s also one of the top photographed tourist attraction in Jaipur.

Hawa Mahal is one of the most photographed tourist attractions in Jaipur.

Hawa Mahal has no parallels. Its beautiful architecture is unmatched! The pictures we see of Hawa Mahal is actually its facade. The main building remains hidden behind this facade. It surely is the most photographed building of Jaipur. Many people ask Why Hawa Mahal is called the Wind Palace?  Hawa Mahal is also known as the Wind Palace among the foreign tourists since Hawa means wind and Mahal stand for Palace in Hindi.

Most tourists find Hawa Mahal straight out of a fairy tale! Quite Exotic…

History of Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal was commissioned by the Maharajah Sawai Pratap Singh and took nine years to build. Completed and executed by Lal Chand Ustad, it was completed in 1799 AD. Hawa Mahal has in all 953 windows!! There are many stories about the inspiration behind this building. I’ll probably write about all of them, some other time.

Stories surrounding Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is shaped liked a Mukut- मुकुट  or the crown. It is inspired by the crown worn by Lord Krishna.  Maharajah Sawai Pratap Singh was an ardent Lord Krishna devotee. He built temples like Brij Nidhi and Goverdhan Nath temple in Jaipur, both temples are devoted to Lord Krishna. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the design of the Hawa Mahal is inspired by the crown of Lord Krishna.

Do you know that Hawa Mahal complex houses a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna? Goverdhan Nath temple is built inside the Hawa Mahal complex. One of the exit gates of Hawa Mahal opens into a courtyard housing Goverdhan Nath temple. Supposedly, a beautiful temple, but years of neglect have left it in a not so good condition!

  1. What lovely pictures you’ve clicked! I saw these many pictures of hawa mahal from these many angles for the first time. they look amazing but scary. because now that I saw that its just a wall kind of a thing and not entire building, it looks illusory.

    1. I’m happy that you liked it. It was posted last year. But I think that posting it along with other pictures of Hawa Mahal puts it in right perspective. Thanks :)!

    1. Mick! Hawa Mahal and Amer Palace are top two places to experience for any tourist visiting Jaipur. I Personally feel that both justify this position. Both are quite enchanting.
