Sawan In Jaipur

Sawan is the fifth month as per Hindu or Indian calendar falling in between July and August. It is considered auspicious for worshiping Lord Shiva. Shravan/Saavan/Sawan – श्रावण Shravan/Sawan is synonymous with monsoon and rains. People are in a mood for fun and enjoyment during this period. Here are two sets of pictures from Sawan in Jaipur depicting fun and enjoyment.

  • Kanwad Yatra in Jaipur – कांवड़ यात्रा

While driving earlier this week, I saw Kanwar Yatra where some devotees were dancing and singing to the music playing in the accompanying van. I had slowed down to almost standstill due to disruption in traffic caused by oncoming Kanvar yatra. I didn’t want to miss an opportunity of capturing this moment so I decided to pull out DSLR from my camera bag. Without adjusting the settings, I simply aimed and captured the following images.

The above picture captured them in a candid moment. However, when they realized that they are being captured on a camera, one of them waved. I was still driving at a very slow pace, it didn’t give me an opportunity to adjust the camera setting. Therefore, the camera failed to focus properly.

I decided to post this picture here even though it’s far from perfect to show you the moment of excitement and fun.

What is Kanwar Yatra?

Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva during Savan. One comes across many such groups of devotees singing and dancing on the road as they proceed towards pilgrim. Usually, the Kanvad group is led by a van fitted with large speakers playing loud religious music.

  • Panna Meena Kund Jaipur

Panna Meena Kund is an ancient Baori in Amer town near Jaipur. Some people call it Panna Mia Kund. With abundant water in Baori due to monsoon season, it became a perfect place for the local boys to have fun on a weekend. They were diving into Panna Meena Kund.

  2. Very neat photo’s! Love the colourful vehicles and I don’t think I could jump off a building into water, although it does look fun!! I’ll try to take photo’s of kids jumping off rocks into our river this week since we are in the midst of a heat wave!! 🙂 Ladybuggz

      Yes, not everyone can jump off from that height. But some really do enjoy!

    1. Thank You. Yes Rim Jhim is synonymous with rains…as well as with bollywood. Of late, bollywood has stopped relishing the rains in it’s movies the way it was 15 years ago. Rain was really celebrated in Bollywood movies! Bollywood goes Hollywood!!!

  8. It is nice to know about this kind of special pilgrimage in your place. I just wonder, why do the all wear orange clothes? Is there is something special with the color? And this place where boys dive into the water is trully amazing. Even if I’m a bit afraid of the height I would love to visit the place and may be jump once)

    1. Lidiia, In India the Hindu religion has many God and Goddesses. It’s not possible to count them- though some people do mention the numbers but I’m not sure if that’s correct because with religion there are no facts and figures.
      Now there are many different types of pilgrimage associated with particular deity or God. This partcular pilgrimage is undertaken for Lord Shiva, considered to be destroyer. He is one of the most prominent God in Hindu religion. The other ones are Lord Bramha- the creator and Lord Vishnu – the preserver.
      Orange color is synonymous with Hindu religion. It denotes spirituality and fire too. here is an article which you might want to read. http://www.sanskritimagazine.com/culture/why-orange-color-is-used/

      The Baori where boys are jumping is an ancient water storage system. It was used long before the taps and pipeline were invented. I’m sure no one would be allowed to dive in water. Water in it was used in many ways. But currently, the baoris are out of use except that they are symbolic and are our cultural & built heritage. May be I’ll make a separate post on this one.

      2. Yes Jaipur is one of the top rated tourist destination in India. it’s quite popular among foreign as well as domestic tourists alike. it’s famous for handicrafts, block printed fabric and garments and jewelry among other things. I’m sure you’ll be able to visit India -very soon. 🙂

    1. Benjamin, I really liked the attitude of this particular person in long hair and beard. I couldn’t capture his picture as he was dancing and didn’t anticipate he’ll pose for a picture.
      Selfie? Surely for social media but for blog I think it doesn’t relate well. 🙂

    1. People in Jaipur has always maintained close association with religion and rituals. Even 200 years ago it was considered as another kashi because of large number of temples present in the city. Majority of population still continue religious practices in same manner as they used to 50 years ago. This is true for people living in walled / old part of Jaipur. Younger generation of course has changed.
      I can understand in fast paced life of Mumbai, people are busy making ‘life’. So it’s difficult to find such scenes and equally difficult to find time to search for one. That’s why I always termed the city as glamorous jail! Apologies if it doesn’t sounds good but I have logical reasons for the same having some some part of my life there. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunities to capture Ganesh Chaturthi which is around. Mumbai really knows how to celebrate it well. 🙂
