Jaipur Art Summit 2016 | Snapshots

Ravindra Manch was the venue for an art event & exhibition in Jaipur, Jaipur Art Summit. It is one of the new-age contemporary art festivals in Jaipur. Jaipur Art Summit provides a strong boost to the art and culture in Jaipur; the city has a buzzing and active art community. Ravindra Manch was once a popular venue in Jaipur for theater and drama, but it fell out over the years because of various reasons. The authorities are revamping the entire place with renovation repair work along with the new investment. The facade of the Ravindra Manch reminds us of the building designs prevalent during the late sixties and seventies hinting towards the Soviet influence. Here is a photo of Ravindra Manch in Jaipur

Everything you want to know about Ravindra Manch in Jaipur

Ravindra Manch in Jaipur took birth in 1963 by the Rajasthan state government to promote dance, music, & theatre. Until November 1985, the Rajasthan state government managed its operations; thereafter, its operation and management were handed over to Ravindra Manch Society. The funds were provided by the state government. Over the last few years, Ravindra Manch was neglected. The music, dance, and theatre community shifted to Jawahar Kala Kendra. The open-air amphitheater was still popular but the rest of the premises were not. The recent renovations are a step in the right direction but only time will tell whether these are effective or not.

Jaipur Art Summit

You can check up on the last year’s Jaipur Art Summit here in this post, Jaipur Art Summit/Art lovers congregate in Pink City. The moment one entered the venue, the Kathputli, or puppet installation under the tree grabbed attention.

Puppetry Of Rajasthan

Puppets are a popular souvenir the tourist carries from Rajasthan. This installation by Vrinda Haldia and Umakant Meena conveys the message of women’s empowerment.

This puppet with an iPhone is a felicitation of women and Rajasthani Art & culture. The large size of the puppets symbolizes the generosity, dedication, independence, confidence, and sacrificing nature of women. As for an iPhone, it conveys the message that if given a chance, women can outperform everywhere, be it at home or the workplace.

The smaller puppets symbolize the advancements made by women in various fields like sports, workspace, art and culture, and so on. All these puppets have been named after the famous women who have made their marks in various fields be it politics, armed forces, or space.

Art Installations

In one of the sections, there was a painting and artifact exhibition. It included interesting stuff and art installation too.

I found the installation “Fly away pollen, Spread the Beauty” by the famous artist Mr. Gopal Namjoshi very interesting. It was made using scrap and items from daily life like spark plugs, ball bearing, acrylic, and locks. It draws attention to the various types of insects on the planet Earth, which form a  very important part of our ecosystem.

Blue Pottery

In another section, many artists from abroad were performing a live demonstration of art from their country. There were artists from Iran, Azerbaijan, Sudan, Afghanistan, China, and so on.

Kolhapuri Chappal Installation

Among the important art installations were two installations from Ms. Kanika Bawa, who holds the Limca Book of Record under Made In India platform. The first one was the largest Kolhapuri Chappals and included 10’6″ and 8’6″ installations.

Kathakali Chair

The second installation was the largest Kathakali chair, dedicated to the ancient dance of India, Kathakali. This Kathakali chair was 10’6″ tall. Here is a picture of this chair with a backdrop of Ravindra Manch.

thang ta dance

The day wound up with an impressive performance of Than-Ta which is a cultural war art from the state of Manipur, India. The traditional name of Thang-Ta is Huyel Langlon, the martial art of Manipur. It is part of Huiyen Lallong performed in Manipur.

I’m posting two videos that depict the heritage martial art of Thang-Ta or Huiyen Lalong in a better way than the pictures. Do watch both of these videos.

Even the effect of the recent Demonetization of high-value Indian currency notes was visible at Jaipur Art Summit. Artists Take on the Demonetization in India. This was placed right next to the entrance of Ravindra Manch building.

    1. Aishwarya, It takes place around first week of December. You can check their webiste, I don’t know the precise dates for 2017. Yes, you must attend this, if you love art. 🙂

    1. Raghav, JLF although has become immensely popular but at the same time it’s in negative news as well, largely because its now a lifestyle fest rather than a pure lit fest. Therefore, the premises are cramped and its almost impossible to find a seat in case of a popular writer or scoial figures. Luckily, these kind of shows are a breather. I’m happy that there were only limited people around, only those who were really interested in art. Have you attended JLF, ever?

      1. I agree. I’ve come very close to attending it and every year hope that it will be something I’ll do but then I see the speakers, notice the discussion topics, and as you said because it’s more of a “lifestyle” (and I’ll add current affairs, political) festival, I give up on it. Plus the crowds are just too much for me.

      2. I agree… It’s best not to visit on Sat and Sun when JLF authorities line up talk shows of the most famous personas. Everything goes out of control.I’ll choose to side with you on your decision to stay away from JLF Raghav. 🙂

    1. Wow! Good to know that you are an art and artifact connoisseur, Teresa. The elephant in brass looks interesting but yes the insect assembly steals the show. It is really needs a creative mind. The fly you mentioned sounds interesting and I would love to see its pictures. 🙂

    1. Mick, the place was buzzing with the activity. Even though I have lot more pictures to show but I think we need to draw the line somewhere. I also missed some sections due to paucity of time. But what I experienced was quite amazing. I hope you saw those two videos, I posted. Yes the Iranian art of khatamkari is superb. 🙂

    1. Jennifer, its great to know that you liked JAF. There are many more fests here like Film fest and Theater fest… But I choose to write about on select few. The Iranian art is actually an ancient art and it was presented by a professor who teaches and practices it in a University in Iran. Thank You for sharing your thoughts here Jennifer 🙂

  3. I liked how art work from different regions of India (not just from Jaipur) and countries as far away as China and Iran has been presented in the 2016 at the Jaipur Art Summit. Thank you also for sharing these lovely photos, Arv!

    1. It’s always good to have some amalgamation. Over the last 600-700 years, Indian art has continued to be enriched by other countries. Artists from middle east were brought in by the invaders & rulers. In globalized world, it’s a natural outcome now. Thank you for sharing your views. 🙂

  4. Just amazing! The iPhone puppet is interesting! The art from Iran is absolutely stunning! Rajasthan & Jaipur in my view are places that are bursting with art & vibrancy! The colours , the patterns, everything! The picture of the messy palette & the countless brushes are my favourite!
Also, I was one of those tourists who brought back the puppets as a prized souvenir:)

    1. Oh! You did? Even I found these two pictures interesting.
I guess tourists and visitors love the color, culture and art from Rajasthan. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here Divya! 🙂

  5. It certainly looks an exciting and colourful event, arv, as well as being very entertaining and educational. There are so many wonderful creations! The huge puppets are are a great way to draw attention to the empowerment of women, and I can only hope the message hit home with people. The martial arts in the videos display such skill, and I can’t help imagining that performers like those would be in demand for “action movies”! 😀
