I have a penchant with sunrises. Having shared pictures of the sunrises in Jaipur over the last few years, I gave it a deliberate break a few months ago only to share pictures of the sunsets once in a while. I took a break from hiking as well and thereby missed many stunning sunrises in Jaipur. Having restarted recently, I find this quote of Donald Miller befitting.
One of the things I associate with God is a sunrise. How many sunrises have you missed over the years, and God created that.
I’m sharing this stunning sunrise from my hike last week which I captured from a smartphone.
Isn’t this sunrise a powerful experience? People generally relate spirituality with religion. While I wouldn’t say it is wrong but in reality, spirituality is something else. To me, this sunrise is nothing less than a spiritual experience. It looks like the almighty decided to show us some light by sending us these beams. It surely makes it worthwhile to get up at 4.30 AM on a weekend!
What does spirituality mean to you?
Let me share another quote from Donald Miller. I don’t vouch for what it says in entirety but there’s a truth in the last line – everyone can enjoy a sunrise!
Christians might say that you can’t live a more meaningful life without Jesus. Well, that’s absolutely not true. You can. You can enjoy a sunrise whether you know Jesus or not.

That’s true, Ramya. Most quotes on the sun refer to this aspect. 🙂

Enchanting! The formation of lines above the sun, which is still hidden adds that glory of spirituality you are talking about, and this picture is a perfect definition…spirituality is more a feeling, an emotion deep within your heart that rises to tell the mind that there is something ethereal in the surroundings. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely…it is a feeling which is why some people feel this connect while meditating while others find it in the peace of a temple. There isn’t any specific place where one can find spirituality. It is relative. You summed it so well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

Spirituality is intimately connected to my Christian faith. But how does it answer your question? In the sense that the Bible especially the New Testament speaks of the Light that shines in the darkness. So when I look at a sunrise I actually have the same experience as you have looking at it. It is my hope that you at least in part understand what I am writing, Arv!

Most religions address spirituality as it is a central theme. The message is also similar in many ways. But I also believe that it is not necessary that spirituality can be achieved by religion. It is a feeling and experience. While I have quoted this author I’m not trying to convey that one should not be religious, I’m drawn by the last line which says that everyone can experience this without being religious. I hope I’m not being misconstrued. When you look at this picture, in my opinion, it is a spiritual experience. There is a divine feeling. So yes, we are on the same platform. 🙂

In whatever form you connect to the divine (your sunset experience for example), you are in a sense a religious person. The root of the English word “religion”, the Latin religio, was originally used to mean only “reverence for God or the gods, careful pondering of divine things. Have a great weekend, Arv!

True! I hardly get an opportunity to witness a sunset! I still remember the beautiful sunset I witnessed on new year’s eve! I wrote a blog post on this sunset 🙂

When I lived near the beach I would sometimes wake up early to go watch the sun rise over the ocean. It really is a spiritual experience. Sunrises always remind me that a new beginning is always around the corner.

One of the most beautiful sunrises I have seen, Arv… One of my favourite quotes “There’s always a story. It’s all stories, really. The sun coming up every day is a story. Everything’s got a story in it. Change the story, change the world.”
― Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

Thanks, Carol. I have heard that quote before and it is so true. I think every picture has a story and every sunrise is unique. Do you also get to see beautiful sunrises in Thailand?

That is so gorgeous. I have seen that in Hampi and once in Arunachal. If I am not wrong, this is a phenomena that causes the rays to split . So beautiful and thank you for joining!
