While Amer Fort is well known, most travelers are unaware of the many beautiful heritage places in Amer town. It doesn’t help that these are not well-publicized by Rajasthan Tourism or any other agency. If you are seeking for an offbeat experience in Jaipur, Amer Heritage Walking tour fits in perfectly. The walk in Amer town lasts for around 35-60 minutes depending on the route chosen. Read Amer Fort Guide
History of Amer
Amer was inhabited by the Meena community before it was captured by the Kacchawa Rajputs. Historians concur the occupation by Rajputs in the 10-11th century. The origin of Rajputs is traced to Narwar in Madhya Pradesh. Before capturing Amer, Kacchawa ruled from Dausa and Jamwa Ramgarh near Jaipur. According to legends, Ambikeshwar Mahadev Temple predates Amer town. However, this is not proven. Here is a picture of Amer town skyline.
Pictures From Amer Heritage Walking Tour
Over here are pictures from a walking tour in Amer. Temples, wells, and stepwells are the most dominant sights along with old Havelis. Unfortunately, very few Havelis have survived. Don’t miss a visit to Anokhi Museum near Panna Meena Kund. It is an old Haveli which has been converted into a museum by John Singh, the founder of Anokhi.
Seen in the above picture is an old temple ruin.
A beautiful balcony and brackets in the above picture.
A beautiful blacony of an ancient Haveli.
A beautiful carved Toran in a Amer Temple.
A restored 11th century temple. The restored part is evident in this picture.
An ancient door from the 11th century temple.
There are many old Havelis in Amer but most are in dilapidated state. Here are a few images of the same.
The end point of Amer Heritage Walking Tour is Sagar lake. It is a scenic spot where one can sit for hours and enjoy the serenity.
Why I recommend Amer Heritage Walking Tour?
Amer predates Jaipur and has many beautiful buildings and temples. This settlement still retains a unique charm and culture. While a lot has changed in the walled city of Jaipur, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is not the case with Amer. A walking tour in Amer won’t disappoint.
