How to recognize red vented Bulbul?

The Red-vented Bulbul is named for the bright red patch of feathers under its tail. This red patch is noticeable, but some similar bird species have it too.

These birds have black feathers on their heads, like a hood. Sometimes this black area covers the whole head, neck, and chest, while other times it’s just like a small cap. There are many variations in between.
