Living in a modern city has its own pros and cons. It enables all of us to enjoy the world-class facilities that come with a well-developed infrastructure. On the flip side, city life poses a lot of pressure and stress on us. Increasing pollution, traffic, work pressure, sales targets…and what not? It’s easy to get bewildered by the constant pressure. With all of us connected round the clock with social media, emails and instant messaging our minds hardly get any time to rest. How to de-stress and maintain sanity? That is a million dollar question! Me Time is one of the best ways to de-stress.
What is “Me time”?
“Me time” is your personal time. It is putting yourself first and choosing to do what you love. Many people struggle to make time for themselves due to various commitments. As per various studies, going for a long period without time for yourself may lead to burnout. “Me time” can make you a better person, and improve your efficiency.
Here are 5 reasons why you should take time out for yourself
- It allows you to clear your mind
- It increases productivity and creativity
- It allows you to plan your life & gain a new perspective
- Avoids burn-outs
- Self-care is a way forward
What are the different ways in which you can use your “Me Time”?
There are many ways in which you can utilize time for yourself. I live in a city inhabited by 3.5 million people. Let me show you how the inhabitants of this city make time for themselves. I have managed to capture a few pictures that show 9 me time ideas from Jaipur.
1. Get away from the city
For some, being able to get away from the concrete structures to enjoy nature works best. While a lot of people prefer to take off for a few days in the Himalayas, it is not always possible for everyone to travel out. In such a case, take a break for a few hours or a day. Find some nice place amidst nature to unwind.

2. Find solace in divinity
Some people enjoy reading religious scriptures or chanting the Shloka/Mantras. It has been scientifically proven that chanting has a calming effect on the mind.

3. Take a stroll in the park
Greenery and parks are known to have a positive impact on our minds. There are people who fall back on parks whenever they are upset. A round of jogging or a brisk walk is all they need to rejuvenate.

4. Listen to the music
Listening to your favorite music makes you happy and will put you in a good mood. Good mood equates energy.

5. Put on your dancing shoes
There are so many dance forms to choose for de-stressing. While some prefer classical dance forms, others pick western dance forms. Lately, many gyms in the city have started offering aerobic and Zumba as an alternative to the usual workouts. Nightclubs also continue to be a very popular option for those who want to dance the night away.

6. Meditate
Find a quiet place and close your eyes. Doing some deep breathing helps you to clear your mind & detox. The eastern cultures lay a lot of stress on meditation to de-stress. Having realized its importance doctors also advocate meditation.

7. Watch the sunset or a sunrise
Let the magic of nature cast its magic on you. The sunrise and sunset are known to be a big attraction among the youngsters here in Jaipur. There are plenty of places in Jaipur to watch the sunset or a sunrise.

8. Treat the foodie in you
Food has continued to be a big draw among humans for centuries. While binge eating has always been associated with stress, there is no harm in treating yourself sometimes with something special. How about that Jalebi, Ghevar, or dark chocolate mousse that you often crave about?

9. Catch up with your friends
Friends are stress busters. Share, laugh, and spend some quality time with friends. A regular dose will ensure your mental well-being.

It’s good to find “me time” even during work hours especially when your job is a high-pressure one. Here’s a picture of police-woman enjoying the view of Badrinath Temple, taking a mini break from her duty at Amer Fort.

However busy you are, you can always find time for yourself even if you have to start with just a few hours every week. Doing this can provide you with some breathing space in your life and help you unwind.

I am a big advocate of ‘Me Time’. I agree with all the suggestions you’ve shared, and when I can’t make time for any, I lose myself in a book. That always works.

Some solid points here. I am a huge fan of the Himalayas. Just love the proximity to nature there. Especially, at an altitude of 3500+ ft, lying on open ground, shivering uncontrollably, looking at the cloudless sky and just staring at the millions of stars… If that’s not heaven, I don’t know what is.
That being said, music and dance are great ways of having me time. BTW, if someone can list ideas of how husbands could take some me time out, I’d send them a nice bottle of wine or something 😛

There you go…The Himalayas are a great escape for the urban young especially the one who is bound in a cubicle for hours. I can aim for that bottle but we men are all different! 🙂

If I were to write on how to have ‘Me Time’ let me assure you my blogger friend, I would write about atleast 8 of the 9 points you have mentioned. I love how you have given so much importance to the Devine and meditation.
Also, I often feel that it’s very important to meet friends now and then. They are our window to the world beyond our work and home.

Love this list and I can assure you that my me-time comprises of most of them. Personally, I would add reading to it. Also, spending time in some creative activity is crucial for me. A Jaipur foodie guy has to treat himself with some awesome treats! Some beautiful places there to explore and get lost in.

Happy to know you do find time for yourself, Varsha. I’m not really a foodie, contrary to what you must be thinking. 🙂 I don’t explore the city that often, either. Work and life keep me busy. 🙂

Yayyy, these are few amazing points indeed. However getting out of the city is not feasible for mums, at least not for me, however, I secretly wish to…wink wink…I go out for a walk or paint or record a song or just sit idle and sip my coffee in peace to maintain my sanity. Loved this post.

I am a PG Wodehouse fan and when I am really stressed out I get hold of an old PG Wodehouse novel and spend an hour or two reading it. It puts me back in a good frame of mind. I have read almost all books written by PG Wodehouse and have a pretty good collection. Sometimes I listen to soothing Ghazals by Jagjit Singh. At other times it would be some excellent Tamil music composed by stalwarts like MS Viswanathan or Ilayaraja. I am also a fan of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and listen often to their songs.

I actually try to avoid me time as much as I can. It scares to be alone with my mind because it is a devilous entity that I can’t get rid of. I’ll run my legs off but I won’t give my mind any idle time.

I’m eclectic in my choice of music. It depends on my mood. Somedays I’ll grunt it out to rock music, on other days, I’ll amble along a path listening to New Age or Electronica. What kind of music appeals to you when you’re hiking/working out? And yes, you really should post one. Many of your followers have no idea of the enigmatic man behind the lens 😉

wow! I also listen to a variety of music. Ambient, and lounge to House..all appeals to me. I don’t listen to music when I’m hiking because nature needs all your attention! As for working out…I’m at mercy of the gym! I have to listen to whatever they want to play! 😉 Sure, I will post a picture… May be I will just add about me page because I have never added one. I only a page about the blog. Thanks for suggesting, Pradita! Now I’m hunting for a good photographer 😉

Such a thoughtful post, Arv. Me time is so important, and we need to love ourselves and take care of ourselves before we can step out and help others. So agree with all of your points here. They may seem very simple, but these are some things which might speak volumes to us. It’s important to have me time when we feel like it so we can feel connected to ourselves.
When I am feeling stressed I like to listen to music to decompress and just forget about the problems for a moment and come back to them with a more level-minded outlook and feeling much better. Treating the foodie in you is a clever point…for me, I like to treat myself to cookies and cream ice-cream 🙂

I’m glad you understand me time. A lot of people don’t. They have been trained to believe that this is wastage of time. So music works for you? What kind of music you like, Mabel?

I listen to a variety of music. Sometimes 90s pop music. Other times Lindsey Stirling, my favourite performer. Then there are times I listen to heavier stuff such as Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed. Hoping you had some me time this week, Arv.
