Which Fort Is Best to Visit in Jaipur?

Which is better – Amer Fort Vs Nahargarh Fort

Amer Fort is one of the most historic ones around. It was the capital of Dhundhar for many centuries. The Kachhawa rulers undertook many wars in close alliance with the Mughals who ruled over the vast area of India until the British replaced them. Amer Fort is famous because of its magnificent architecture which features a blend of Mughal and Rajput elements as well as its picturesque setting. This fort is more historic than the rest two forts.

Nahargarh Fort was built for defensive reasons by Sawai Jai Singh II. What makes Nahargarh Fort unique is its location which provides gorgeous views of Jaipur as it is perched on the edge of a hill. Although the fort is spread over a vast area, the palace section is considerably smaller than the one in Amer.

Therefore, you should visit Amer for its beauty and historical importance. If you admire marvelous views, Nahargarh Fort is your first choice. Many travelers visit Amer because of the Amer Fort elephant ride.

This is unique to Amer and not available in any other fort. Do note that one needs to take a hill road to reach Nahargarh Fort and one needs a dedicated vehicle to reach Nahargarh Fort. Amer is easily accessible with local buses and other transport like auto-rickshaws/Tuk-Tuk and taxis.

Which is better – Jaigarh Fort Vs Amer Fort

Amer Fort has undergone renovations many times. It is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site under the category of Hill Forts of Rajasthan. This is maintained by the state government through the Department of Archaeology. The importance of Amer Fort has already been highlighted in this post. Jaigarh Fort overlooks Amer Town and provides breathtaking views of the region. Read the complete post on Jaigarh Fort

Jaivan Canon

Jaigarh Fort is best known for one of the largest canons in the world- Jaivan Canon. Many travel sites and travel guides in Jaipur claim this to be the largest cannon in the world. However, there are many parameters for evaluating the largest canon in the world. You can read more about the list of the largest cannons in this Wikipedia link – the largest cannons in the world.

Another less highlighted aspect of the Jaigarh Fort is its cannon foundry; it is one of the earliest cannon foundries in India as per available data.

Lastly, the Jaigarh Fort is equally known for its water storage/reservoir system. It features a huge tank that can collect & store a vast amount of water collected via a water harvesting system. Jaigarh Fort Treasure

One of the most mysterious incidents surrounding Jaigarh Fort is related to the Jaigarh Fort treasure. A search for treasure in Jaigarh Fort during India’s emergency period under the rule of then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi took place. The hunt for Jaigarh fort treasure was a closely guarded operation and even today not many details are available. As per popular legend, Indira Gandhi on a tip-off launched a huge operation to search for the treasures of the Jaipur royal family amassed over centuries during the many wars fought by Kachhawa rulers hidden in Jaigarh Fort. The search focussed on the water tank. A popular rumor was the Jaipur-Delhi highway was closed to the public to allow the transfer of this treasure from Jaipur to Delhi via a huge army convoy. Was treasure found in Jaigarh Fort? The official statement released mentioned a confiscation of 230 Kilo silver during the search operations. Then Pakistani prime minister, Julfikar Bhutto also claimed their share citing the reason that this was a pre-partition asset. There are many more rumors surrounding the search operations for Jaigarh Fort Treasure during the emergency period.

However, among the two, the Amer Fort is better maintained and restored many times. Jaigarh Fort despite its importance has not been maintained very well. It is owned by the descendants of the erstwhile rulers of Jaipur. Many sections of the fort are inaccessible to visitors. The potential is immense only if the Jaigarh Fort owners decide to change the current status.

It is possible to access Jaigarh Fort via a cobbled path from Amer Fort and enter from the alternative gates. This might save time for some travelers.

It is impossible to generalize for everyone. However, considering the fact that if someone has to choose just one fort to visit in Jaipur due to lack of time, I will suggest Amer ort or Nahargarh Fort. The reasons for my choice have been mentioned earlier in this post.

Which are the Forts in Jaipur For Stay?

There are many more forts near Jaipur but either they have been converted into heritage hotels or they are in shambles. It is not an easy task to maintain forts considering the huge amount of money required. Converting the forts into hotels does allow a reasonable amount to maintain the heritage structures. A few good examples are Tijara Fort, Neemrana Fort, Kesroli Fort, and Dadicker Fort in the Alwar region. There is no fort in Jaipur for a stay. Fort Bishangarh is one of the most popular forts near Jaipur for a stay.

I hope this travel guide on the best forts in Jaipur will help travelers plan their Jaipur itinerary better.

    1. Indeed. I will suggest a visit to Nahargarh Fort as well, Cornelia. It is surprise how in those days they could create massive buildings without new technology and make it so beautiful too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  1. Such a beautiful display of all the forts in Jaipur. I honestly had no idea that there were 6 or actually more than really Amer because that is the only one Darcee & I visited during our short stay in Jaipur.
I vividly remember the inside courtyard that you captured in one of your pictures above where I stared at the beautiful architecture!
As for when we return, it seems like a trip to Amer is always in style but I think we should also check out both Jaigarh Fort & Nahargarh Fort. I love the idea of the overlook and sunset images you can experience at Nahargarh. Plus the pictures of the walls you captured for some reason really talk to me

    1. I’m glad you could visit Amer, Eric. Other forts are beautiful and historic. I’m not surprised you enjoyed the tour to Amer. May be someday you can come back and finish the rest of places you could not visit. Thanks for sharing your thought, Eric.

  2. We are very sorry we missed Jaipur when we visited India. It was interesting to read more about the forts in Jaipur to know which ones we might want to see if we visit. Even thought Amer is a palace, this would certainly be one we would want to visit. Although visiting the Nahargarh Fort with its long wall would remind me of seeing the Great Wall of China. It certainly looks like we should see all the forts if we had enough time.

  3. It’s incredible how many forts are located in Jaipur, not to mention the surrounding areas! I would want to make sure I stay in the city long enough to visit Nahargarh Fort, Jaigarh Fort, and Amer Fort. But I think if I was short on time, I’d be most drawn to the stunning panoramic views offered by Nahargarh Fort! It’s too bad Jaigarh Fort is not being maintained as well as it could be.

  4. It is wonderful to read this comparison of the different forts in Jaipur. I remember reading a few of them in your blog over the years, and now it’s great to hear your thoughts on which one might be worth the visit depending on what you’re after. Amer Fort certainly sounds like it has a rich history and covers a fair bit of ground. The elephant ride there sounds like something different to do, and it’s great the place is quite accessible – perfect for a short day trip. Jaigarh Fort also looks to showcase a bit of history, with the largest cannons in the world and they do look large. It seems Nahargarh Fort might be the fort where you can spend a few hours admiring the views.

I guess these forts would be really enjoyable visits if it’s not too wet weather-wise. And knowing how hot Jaipur can be, mornings might be a good time to visit.

Hope you are doing well, Arv 🙂

      1. I have not been to any forts actually. As I really don’t mind warm and hot weather, I don’t think I’d mind visiting a fort in Jaipur in the middle of the day 🙂 It sounds like you can get a good walk at these forts you mentioned. Hope you are doing well over there.

  5. I have been to both Amer Fort and Nahargarh Fort. I like Amer fort more. While i was there i learned that Nahargarh fort is a popular place among youth, I found it a little eerie. I wish to see other forts you mentioned, when i go there next time. Thank you for such a detailed and informative piece.

    1. I’m not surprised, Arohii. I do like Nahargarh Fort because it offers something different – expansive space and great views. It has been restored very well. I will recommend you to visit again this time but not on the weekends or holiday.
