9 Ideas For “Me Time”

Living in a modern city has its own pros and cons. It enables all of us to enjoy the world-class facilities that come with a well-developed infrastructure. On the flip side, city life poses a lot of pressure and stress on us. Increasing pollution, traffic, work pressure, sales targets…and what not? It’s easy to get bewildered by the constant pressure. With all of us connected round the clock with social media, emails and instant messaging our minds hardly get any time to rest. How to de-stress and maintain sanity? That is a million dollar question! Me Time is one of the best ways to de-stress.

What is “Me time”?

“Me time” is your personal time. It is putting yourself first and choosing to do what you love. Many people struggle to make time for themselves due to various commitments. As per various studies, going for a long period without time for yourself may lead to burnout. “Me time” can make you a better person, and improve your efficiency.

Here are 5 reasons why you should take time out for yourself

  1. It allows you to clear your mind
  2. It increases productivity and creativity
  3. It allows you to plan your life & gain a new perspective
  4. Avoids burn-outs
  5. Self-care is a way forward

What are the different ways in which you can use your “Me Time”?

There are many ways in which you can utilize time for yourself. I live in a city inhabited by 3.5 million people. Let me show you how the inhabitants of this city make time for themselves. I have managed to capture a few pictures that show 9 me time ideas from Jaipur.

1. Get away from the city

For some, being able to get away from the concrete structures to enjoy nature works best. While a lot of people prefer to take off for a few days in the Himalayas, it is not always possible for everyone to travel out. In such a case, take a break for a few hours or a day. Find some nice place amidst nature to unwind.

5. Put on your dancing shoes

There are so many dance forms to choose for de-stressing. While some prefer classical dance forms, others pick western dance forms. Lately, many gyms in the city have started offering aerobic and Zumba as an alternative to the usual workouts. Nightclubs also continue to be a very popular option for those who want to dance the night away.

Find a quiet place and close your eyes. Doing some deep breathing helps you to clear your mind & detox. The eastern cultures lay a lot of stress on meditation to de-stress. Having realized its importance doctors also advocate meditation.

  1. Very well said, “Me time” is very very important and I have dedicated time for that. It doesn’t depend on anything such as rain, heat, work or company. When I want “me time” I take it anyway, yes people can be part of my “me time”

    1. I like that attitude, Raj. In our culture where society and people takes a precedence me time is unheard of. It is equated with being selfish. People don’t realize that it is very important for mental health.

      1. Thank you. Yes we have to breakout of society shakles when needed. Yes, we need to be in our own selfishness upto some extent, just to make sure of our well being. We have to understand that .. “We only have ourselves to take care”.. thats the utltimate truth. 😊🤔

  4. That cake, though!!! 🙂
Yes, as someone who lives in a big, busy, crowded city (NYC), I agree with the need to take time, make space, and find ways to replenish: There are many parks in the City’s five boroughs, most famous of them may be Central Park, but there are many others, too, big and small, where one can find some quiet space, greenery, and calm. Coffee shops and some people watching (and introspection) are also a great way to destress, and there is always meditation. Walking meditation happens to be my favorite, but there any way one can quiet the mind is lovely, healthy, and helpful.
Here’s to making ‘me time’ part of self-care and everybody-care … (I tell parents that if they take some time for themselves, they are investing in their children having calmer, healthier, more centered and grounded parents, and are giving their kids an example of how to self-care).
Great post. Now, about that cake … 😉

Yes, it is important that we put our mental well being as one of the most important things to do. After all, this keeps us going. It is like “periodic maintenace”. Go out and enjoy a cake, Na’ama!
