However, only a few temples enjoy a substantial following, attracting a swarm of devotees. A visit to Govind Dev Ji Temple and Moti Dungari Temple forms a significant part of the daily lives of many residents. Ask any local ” Which is the famous Mandir in Jaipur?” and it is highly likely he will say Govind Dev Ji and Moti Dungari Ganesh Mandir.

Fascinating History of Moti Dungari Mandir

Who built it? The story of Seth Jai Ram Palliwal

Moti Dungari Ganesh Temple was built by Seth Jai Ram Palliwal in 1761 AD. Sawai Madho Singh I, the king of Jaipur was an ardent follower of Lord Ganesha.

The legend of Ganesh idol brought by bullock cart

During one of Sawai Madho Singh Ivisits to his in-laws in Mawli, Mewar, he wished to construct a Ganesha temple in Jaipur. The king of Mewar instructed the Ganesha idol to be transported to Jaipur by a bullock cart. According to popular legend, the cart stopped at the base of Moti Dungari hill and couldn’t be moved. The idol of Ganesha is in the sitting form and wears a vermillion color which is considered the dress. The temple architecture doesn’t have any striking outward characteristics and is comparatively small.

As per tradition, Jaipur residents visit this temple to seek the blessings of the lord before starting any new venture or auspicious work. It is an essential part of Hindu customs.

Lord Ganesha is considered to be an obstacle remover. Therefore, people visit here for a small ceremony on the purchase of a new vehicle and to invite Lord Ganesh for auspicious events like marriage. It is difficult not to notice the shops selling Besan Ladoo in the vicinity. This is the most popular offering people make in this temple.

Which Vaishnav tradition does the temple follow?

This temple follows the tradition of the Gaudiya Vaishnava sect. The priest’s family is primarily from Bengal and follows the tradition whereby the descendant of the priest is the successor. Therefore, they are called Mahant.

Moti Dungari Temple court case and blocking of roas

Over the last few years, the temple was involved in a court case as the temple authorities placed barricades obstructing the road leading to the temple. This resulted in inconvenience to the public as it was an encroachment. Moreover, metal railings were installed on the road for maintaining a queue system for entry to the temple. This too created a public nuisance. The court ruling went against the temple management, and amendments were made suitably.

Why is Moti Dungari Temple called by this name?

One might wonder why it is called Moti Dungari? Moti refers to pearl and Dungari is a hillock. The temple is situated at the base of a small hillock. I possess a little clue about why it is called Moti. The fort located above the temple used to be called Shankargarh. It used to be one of the most coveted place of Gayatri Devi, the last queen of Jaipur. It used be her personal property. During the emergency years, she mentioned Moti Dungari Fort was raided by Income Tax officials in her book – The Princess Remembers.

Is Moti Dungari Temple as popular as Govind Dev Ji Temple?

The kind of aura Govind Devji Temple commands is immense and unrivaled. It hasn’t changed ever since the city was founded. The following for Moti Dungari Temple, on the contrary, has gone up only in the recent history of JAipur. Therefore, in many ways, both temples are incomparable. One can experience the respect Govind Devji commands in the heart and minds of people. Govind Dev Ji is much more historic than Moti Dungari Temple.

The probable reason for this difference can be one of these analogies. Ever since Jaipur was founded, the Jaipur royalty considered Govind Dev Ji as the real ruler of the city. Many of the rulers would start the day with the Darshan of Govind Devji. This wasn’t the case with Ganesh Ji Temple. The oldest Ganesha temple in Jaipur is Garh Ganesh Temple in Brahampuri established by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. It is a historic temple.

• Wednesday, the day of Ganesh Ji is always crowded.

• Other than Wednesdays, the temple doesn’t have so much crowd.

• The biggest highlight of the temple is celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi. The celebration lasts more than a day and culminates in a procession that travels all the way to the base of a Garh Ganesh Temple hillock passing through Moti Dungari Road, Johari Bazaar, Choti Chaupar, Gangauri Bazaar and Brahampuri.

• One should watch out for pickpockets.
• As is customary in temples across India, footwear needs to be removed before entering the temple. It is best to hand over and obtain a token from the in charge for the safekeeping of your footwear.

The most accseesible road is JLN Marg. Cars can be parked in Birla Mandir parking which is close by. The other option is to visit from Dharam Singh Circle, MD Road.

Reaching Garh Ganesh Temple involves a climb through arduous stairs. Only a few can do so on a regular basis. People always prefer an easy way out. What are special events held by Moti Dungari Ganesh Temple?

The temple management follows a unique tradition of distributing Mehendi among devotees on Ganesh Chaturthi. This tradition started approx.70 years ago with 1.25 kg. The tradition is aligned with an old tradition of Dhundhad region called Danka Chauth where the young boys is gifted with clothes,sweets and Mehendi by her mothers family. The logic for this tradition is that collecting Mehendi along with “Darshan” of Ganesh Ji fulfills the wishes of devotees. In 2026, someone created a reel which went viral. The reel claimed that unmarried male or female will get married if they can get Mehendi. This attracted a large number of people from across India and created a stampede like situation. Here is a picture of Moti Dungari Ganesh Temple during Ganesh Chaturthi celebration from September 2026. In a way, the temple authorities statement that they will distribute highest ever quantity of Mehendi – 3500 kg on a single day added to the story. I’m not sure if there is any involvement of temple management in collaboration with the influencer who created this reel. Some people believe this was a pubilicty stunt to make the temple popular across country and bring it on a level of Siddhi Vinayak Mandir in Mumbai.
